Bolesław Buyko (Bujko)
1878 - 1939
Boleslaw Buyko attended the Ivan Trutniev Drawing School in Vilnius. In the years 1896-1902 he studied at the Kraków School (later Academy) of Fine Arts under Florian Cynk, Jacek Malczewski, Alfred Daun and Leon Wyczółkowski. In 1902 (or 1903) he permanently settled in Paris, exhibiting at the Salons beginning in 1904. He also traveled to Great Britain and Italy.
He produced oil paintings, water-colors, drawings and lithographs. It is claimed that his early pictures owe a great deal to the painting of Jan Stanisławski. Later, he more often reflected the influence of postimpressionism. His art enjoyed considerable success in Paris. His subjects frequently included townscapes of various side streets in the French capital and views of historic interiors.
He organized exhibitions of his works in 1914 and 1920 at his Paris studio. One-man shows were staged in 1921 in Lvov, 1922 in Nice and 1938 in Warsaw (at the Salon of Henryk Koterba). He also sent his works to Poland for group exhibitions in Warsaw, Lvov, Vilnius and Kraków.
